How does this thing even work?

OK I am not sure what this thing is called so I am going to explain it. (The the thing that you can plug in a bunch of electrical things with just one of them plugged into an electrical socket). So how does that work? isn't that the same as just putting in all of them in regular sockets? How exactly do they work? How does this thing even work?
They're calle surge protectors. No only do they allow you to maximize use of your outlets, they are safer to use (unless you overload them). For example, in an electrical storm, if lightning struck your house, all the gadgets plugged into the walls would fry from the surge of electricity travelling up the cord, but gadgets plugged into a surge protector would not blow out. Also, many of them have on/off switches so you can turn multiple appliances on or off. You'll have to check about the specifics of how they work. How does this thing even work?
